For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes...
Most interesting Halfmom. Are you involved in this yourself?
Yes, if you read down through the article you will find that I am one of the speakers. Which, I'm afraid, is causing a great deal of consternation at the moment for me as I prepare the talk!
May the Lord bless you Susan, and strengthen and comfort you. Amen. That's exciting for you to be speaking with all these scientists I would imagine.
Actually, I'm one of the scientists. I will be giving a normal scientific presentation on my research to the Society later in the week. This is the Public Health Forum that our Society puts on each year. It is free, open to the public and specifically for them to bring them state-of-the-art science at a level they can understand and use. I just don't like speaking, especially before large audiences, so even though my topic is within my area of expertise, it won't be fun for me! I will be speaking on legal and safety issues as well as efficacy. To be marketed, the supplements are supposed to be generally regarded as safe (GRAS) - but the US laws leave a lot to be desired in this regard in the level of oversight and funding FDA has. Also, most people assume that GRAS mean generally efficacious which is not the case at all. Lots of spurious claims are made every day - big companies and the fly by nights as well. Kinda scary when you know the insider version!
"Actually, I'm one of the scientists."I knew that, but I was clumsy as usual."I just don't like speaking, especially before large audiences, so even though my topic is within my area of expertise, it won't be fun for me!"I shall pray you shall have great confidence in our Lord's being with you, and your own giftedness.
thanks - I'll take all the prayers I can get! I'll be working on the talk again tomorrow.
Interesting. Deb and I are both interested in this, and we do try to eat (and drink) as much along the lines spoken of here, as possible. And some studies seem to indicate a large intake of red meats and even sugar may contribute to this problem. Hope it goes well for you.
Will there be a download by which we can hear your talk, Susan?
Not on your life, Ted! I think I'd die if I thought someone was taping or recording!! The majority of the material that I use will be available though. It's on the National Insitutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements website. If you have a college library near you, they are likely to have the review article by JA Joseph that is referenced in the article so you can read it. That will be the majority of his talk. Don't know what material the 3rd speaker will be using.
Thanks, Susan. I know Deb would really be tuned in with both ears for sure. Though I find that interesting myself. I know how it is when I teach anyhow, so that I would probably feel much the same way. I love the idea of teaching and want to do so, but when the time comes I never feel ready no matter what. Though opportunity lately has given me more confidence and assurance and I can relax more in it. But sometimes one just has to take it by faith that it went okay. I'm sure you'll do well even if you're "shaking in your boots"! May the Lord's help be evident to you and to your listeners.(Please forgive me for coming back here and correcting a grammatical error. I really get hung up over such things, and have a hard time letting it go. ha!)
So . . . does your work on dietary supplements fall into the Good, the Bad, or the Ugly? ;-)
All depends :) especially at the moment with a funded grant. But, the bottom line of the talk was that botanical and supplements are not regulated like people think they are. They are not necessarily safe of efficacious and people assume that because they aren't required to get a prescription to get them, that they are always safe.
